3/18/18: Rummy-O

This afternoon after church, I sat down and played Rummy-O with my grandmother-in-law. I don’t know if you’ve ever played this game, but it’s a good one! Gram (as everyone affectionately calls her) has played this game for many years, with her children and grandchildren. When my sister-in-law comes to visit, she usually plays a few rounds and talks about how long they’ve been playing the game. Often times Gram plays the game alone. However, while she plays as herself, she almost always plays as me too, going back and forth between the two tile racks. If she finishes a game, she will let me know if I won or not. It’s a running joke in our house! She has said many times that playing for me makes her think better!┬áSince moving in with my husband and I almost two years ago, she frequently pulls out her tiles and has a go.

Today, Gram and I played a game that was intended to be short, as I had a long list of things to accomplish today. It was not short. We played a round for almost 45 minutes! It was a back and forth game, sometimes playing many tiles at once, others resulting in more tiles gained from no apparent moves. I did eventually win, after 80% of the game tiles were played out in front of us.

  1. I have never heard of this game. How nice of you to take time out of your day to play a round.

  2. How fun to have a game like that with tradition attached. Time so often gets away from us. So glad you took that time with Grams today. She sounds like a hoot.

  3. I think I’ve played this game before. The tiles look familiar, and your post reminded me of the games I played w/ family as a child. Thank you for sharing this moment w/ your grandmother and for sparking my own nostalgia.

  4. This looks like lots of fun! My mom plays a ton of bridge, she says it keeps her mind sharp. It makes perfect sense to me.
